Astronautical Graphic Novel

I have never been a graphic novel person like my son. He loves Korean graphic novels he finds online. I got the chance to review a middle grade graphic novel though called Astronautical by Brooklyn Stormie and I thought my daughter mind enjoy it. She hasn’t even tried it yet but I wanted to share about it because I READ IT and I LOVED IT.

Disclosure: I received a copy for review. This post contains affiliate links.

Astronautical by Brooklyn Stormie (Middle Grade Graphic Novel)

Honestly I had just planned to read a few pages to give an overview of it here, not a review. But I couldn’t put it down. I don’t read adult fiction or middle grade fiction to myself or graphic novels. But here I am finished with it in one sitting. ONE SITTING.

I takes place in space and is definitely a science fiction type graphic novel. Which if I DID read fiction, would not be my type of choice. Although I do like science fiction tv and movies sometimes.

Of course it IS by my favourite children’s publisher, Annick Press. On their website you will find a quite large look inside and activity sheets to go with the novel.

I’m not sure what drew me in so much but I really liked the storyline and the (sometimes odd) characters. I share the summary below. But keep reading to find out the BEST PART.

Summary: A century ago, planet Zephyr exploded under mysterious circumstances. Ever since, generations have been living out their lives on the remaining floating planet chunks.

Brothers Max and Lari and their father Captain Cherryhair deliver goods around the galaxy on their spaceship—until their father is suddenly kidnapped by the fox minions of Cynosure, the Planet Breaker.

Luckily, a couple of stars with a ferryboat business offer to help the brothers on their rescue mission. But when Max sustains a life-threatening black hole injury, little brother Lari finally has to step up and take care of his chronically in-charge big brother.

Will Lari be able to figure out the secret of the broken planet and face the powerful Cynosure? Can he save not only his brother, but the people of Zephyr too?

Astronautical! is packed with quirky characters and exciting adventures, where wooden mast ships sail through space (totally not real science), whales are spaghettified by black holes (kind of real science), and comets travel through time (absolutely real science).

What I like best of all? The back few pages of the book. Seriously. In them, the author shares what is completely made up science, sort of science and real science. If you tried to guess which is which, you very well may be wrong. Science is weird!

If you or your child are looking for something a little strange but also a lot interesting, check out Astronautical.
