Lisa of Willesden Lane is a good children’s chapter book that is based on a true story. I suggest it for a homeschool reader for ages 8-12 depending on their reading level.

This book is the easier version of a line of books about Lisa, a real girl who was musically gifted and lived during World War II. She lived in Vienna I believe but had to leave alone to safety to get away from Hitler’s regime. She escapes through the Kindertransport to America without her family and lives with other alone children who were rescued. She takes her musical gift and shows that even those in the worst circumstances can turn their luck around.
There is a picture book, this book (Lisa of Willesden Lane), young reader’s edition and adult edition of this story so all levels can enjoy it. The book has pretty big text and a few illustrations but is definitely a chapter book. The book includes asides to deal with common questions about World War II and what was going on to give more background information. For younger readers I suggest reading together so you can help with the asides which are a little harder to read but also can be a harder topic.
At the end the book has photos, discussion questions, timeline and resources. The website HoldOnToYourMusic.org has even more resources for learning.
