Great Dog by Davide Cali

We had the pleasure of reading Great Dog by Davide Cali which is quite unlike most picture books in a few different ways.

Great Dog by Davide CaliSummary: A pup and his father contemplate his grand future while looking at other Great Dogs in their family. Will he be a marathon runner like Uncle Tibor, the fastest dog in the family? Will he be an astronaut like Aunt Yuki, who reached for the stars? Or maybe a teacher like Uncle Scooter, respected by all? No matter what, says his father, he will be a GREAT dog!

The summary doesn’t explain what makes this book unique. Each page has a fold out section that lets you get to know more about the dog in the portrait but their life turns out not to be quite what you’d expect from the portrait. Also there is a twist ending.

This is the perfect book for adopted children or those who like unusual books or surprise endings. The book is about family, acceptance, being who you are, and growing up.

The illustrations by Miguel Tanco are a nice difference from most books too. I like the style, it fits well for a book about portraits.

The book is for ages 3-7 and my 4 and 7 year old thought it was good.
