Grammar for Writers

Grammar for Writers is a half credit course for high school level that can be completed completely online.

“Grammar for Writers is designed to help students and writers analyze their own writing, diagnose problems, and write better sentences. The series is taught by Jonathan Rogers, author of The Wilderking Trilogy, The World According to Narnia, and other books.”

– Compass Classroom

The course has 41 lessons and 36 quizzes on a variety of aspects of writing from parts of speech to subject and object to clauses and prepositional phrases.

Each lesson is typically a 10ish minute video and then lecture notes to review. There is a quiz with about 5-10 questions to see what you learned. It’s a bit challenging if you don’t have a good grasp of basic grammar. You need to understand the concept from the video very well to do well on the quiz.

I’d recommend this course for those who have a basic understanding of grammar and who would like to polish their skills for writing. This is NOT a beginner grammar course.

The course keeps track of your progress and emails you a record of how you did in your quizzes. You can redo the quizzes if you did poorly on them to try again. I like that includes a video AND lecture notes so that it works for both auditory and visual learners.

Compass Classroom has a lot of other courses to choose from as well on topics such as history, economics, vocabulary and more.
