The True Story of Zippy Chippy: The Little Horse That Couldn’t is a cute book written by author Artie Bennett. Artie also wrote two other favourites of ours The Butt Book and Poopendous. (reviewed when my book blog included fiction.)

Zippy Chippy is a true story of a famous racehorse who was famous for LOSING every race he ever ran.

The picture book (with adorable illustrations by Dave Szalay) tells Zippy Chippy’s story of losing every race and being ornery and mischievious.

He always loses, sometimes not even getting out of the gate. But he is depressed if he isn’t racing. He loves racing, even though he is not very good at it. He didn’t quit, not even when he was banned from racetracks. Even when he lost a race with a baseball player he kept loving to race.

Moral

The moral of the story is:

“It takes guts to compete-win, lose or draw. And it takes courage to dream. Zippy showed us that you can lose and lose and lose and still be a winner. Yep, Zippy won in the end.”

There is a long Author’s Note at the end that gives more background for older readers or parents. It does mention that horses are sometimes sold to slaughterhouses and made into steaks. So you might want to think about if your child is old enough to read it. I appreciated learning more about him though.
