My Little Pony teaches many life lessons about friendships and not just typical preschool lessons such as sharing, taking turns and hands off.

Life Lessons About Friendship With My Little Pony

If you aren’t familiar with the newest version of the show, Friendship is Magic let me give you a little background. Then go pop on Netflix and check it out!

Twilight Sparkle is given a mission in Equestria by Princess Celestia to study the magic of friendship and report back on her findings through her baby dragon, Spike.

Life Lessons About Friendship with My Little Pony

A show that used to be typically a young girl’s show when I was young, is now watched my kids and adults of all ages and genders and so has the ability to impart the knowledge of friendship to more than just 5 year old girls. I am so glad that my son likes My Little Pony.

My Little Pony Lessons About Friendship

When Twilight dictates one of her letters to Princess Celestia, we get to hear what she says about friendship. Below are two examples of letters she wrote in different episodes.

Dear Princess Celestia,
My friend Applejack is the best friend a pony could ever have, and she’s always there to help anypony. The only trouble is, when she needs help she finds it hard to accept it. So while friendship is about giving of ourselves to friends, it’s also about accepting what our friends have to offer.

Your faithful student,
Twilight Sparkle
Dearest Princess Celestia,
Today I learned that it’s hard to accept when somepony you like wants to spend time with somepony who’s not so nice. Though it’s impossible to control who your friends hang out with, it is possible to control your own behavior. Just continue to be a good friend. In the end, the difference between a false friend and one who’s true will surely come to light.

Your faithful student,
Twilight Sparkle
Don’t those sound like lessons that even adults sometimes forget? I think they do.

A True True Friend

The season finale for Season 3 was so moving, I was in tears. Seriously. This song from that episode is all about reminding your friends who they are. All the songs in My Little Pony are amazing.

There aren’t too many kid’s shows that I like so much that I would watch it on my own, even when the kids aren’t home. My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic is one of them. Or actually, I think the only one! I can’t wait till Season 4 is on Netflix as I’ve already watched Seasons 1-3 and Equestria Girls multiple times.

If you are raising your eyebrows at me now, you haven’t really watched more than 2 episodes of MLP: Friendship is Magic. Give it a try with your children (or alone.) It’s back to school season, the perfect time to learn or be reminded of friendship lessons.

If Friendship isn’t what you and your child need help with, Netflix has lots of other shows you might consider.

Young Children:

  1. Thomas & Friends: Thomas & His Friends Help Out
  2. Monster Math Squad (learn math!)
  3. Curious George
  4. Super Why! (learn reading!)
  5. My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic
  6. Signing Time (learn sign language!)
  7. Animal ABCs (ABC practice!)
  8. LeapFrog: Numbers Ahoy (My son has been learning numbers with this one)

Older Children:

1. Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax (Doing the right thing)
2. Ever After: A Cinderella Story
3. Glee (Self-Esteem and Social Skills)
