To Tell the Truth – Lying to our Children

Spread the love

The topic of lying to our children has been talked about many times. I was reading an article in the March 2012 issue of Today’s Parent. It’s called I’m Sure Gramps Will Be Just Fine by Lisa Van de Deyn.

“…we all deceive our broods for a number of reasons – to spare their feelings, preserve tradition, protect young ears and encourage good behaviour. We also do it because, let’s face it, sometimes it’s easier to tell tales than the truth.” – pg 125

“I do try to be truthful because I don’t believe that kids should be deceived, but in some cases, if it’s harmless and it’s going to save some grief in the short term, I think it’s fine.” – pg 126

This sounded like it made sense to me but then reading the examples, I agreed with some and disagreed with others and I realized that what we believe is harmless is different for each parent.
