My Son Likes My Little Pony and I am Okay With That

Spread the love

My son likes My Little Pony and I’m okay with that. What’s not to love? Even I enjoy watching it as do many grown ups, including men who are known as Bronies. (Bro+Ponies.)

With three sisters, my son is bound to enjoy things traditionally thought of as for girls but it’s not just that. Sure he’ll also watch Dora and Care bears and he has a fondness for Dora too but he LOVES My Little Pony even more. His favourite? Rainbow Dash. Honestly she is one of the most tomboyish ponies in the show but even if his favourite was Rarity (prim and proper fashionista) I would be okay with that.

My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic (MLP:FIM) is the show that is on right now. It’s way better than the My Little Pony of when I was growing up. The older versions were just about ponies and playing and fun. The MLP:FIM version has lessons to teach.

“The show follows a studious unicorn pony named Twilight Sparkle as her mentor Princess Celestia guides her to learn about friendship in the town of Ponyville. Twilight becomes close friends with five other ponies: Applejack, Rarity, Fluttershy, Rainbow Dash, and Pinkie Pie. Each represents a different face of friendship, and Twilight discovers herself to be a key part of the magical artifacts, the ‘Elements of Harmony’. The ponies share adventures and help out other residents of Ponyville, while working out the troublesome moments in their own friendships.” – source: Wikipedia

Why would I want my children, including my son to NOT watch it when it teaches such great friendship lessons?

The show reminds me of a musical as well because there are always such great songs being sung in it. Most parents get kid songs stuck in their head but at least the MLP songs are good! They are often just fun but sometimes they teach a lesson on their own such as ‘Giggling at the Ghosties’.

I mentioned Bronies before. There is actually a documentary all about them which I watched recently on Netflix although I’m sure it can be found elsewhere. It says a Brony is a name for an adult fan of MLP but believe it or not, mostly men were shown. These adults aren’t just casual fans of the show like I am. They are addicted. They create art based on it, gave themselves MLP names and go to conventions with other Bronies.

Do you have My Little Pony watchers in your house? Or did you watch it when you were young? Do you know any boys/men who like MLP? What do you think about it?
