Bea’s Balikbayan Box of Treasures by Christine Alemshah is a cute picture book for ages 4-9 about playing with boxes and a Filipino tradition called Balikbayan. The illustrations by Dream Chen are so cute too.
This adorable story features a girl named Bea who lives in America but embraces her Filipino heritage by sharing a box of goodies with her family back in The Philippines. She also shares all the fun things she does with boxes when she is playing.
She and her family patiently wait for their box to arrive with their family as it’s a long boat ride for the box to get there.
The book teaches you some Filipino words and there is a glossary in the back so you can look up the words. However it’s mostly obvious what the words mean.
The back of the book has lots of goodies too such as instructions for how to make cool things out of boxes and suggestions on how you can make a box of goodies for someone special.
